Guy Fawkes day

On Monday, England celebrated Guy Fawkes day. For us colonials, who was he?

Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of English Roman Catholics which planned to carry out the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I of England, to destroy Protestant rule by killing the Protestant aristocracy, on November 5, 1605. (At least that's what Wikipedia says!)

Every November 5th, in the United Kingdom, celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country in the form of both private and civic events. They involve firework displays and the building of bonfires.

We attended a Guy Fawkes fireworks display at Midsummer commons in downtown Cambridge. It was packed! We went with friends, Hunter & Laura and Mark & Bettina (and their children) and enjoyed the festivities!

They really did light a huge bonfire after the fireworks. I have never seen such a massive fire! This is what it looked like from a quarter mile away.

We're used to 4th of July fireworks that start at about 10 at night. With our long nights now, these began at 7:30! That was nice~
